Facing Life’s Challenges
by Karl A. McKinney
UNIT 1: Grace. The Genesis story of Joseph and his brothers is one of the great stories from the Bible, with forgiveness and grace among its underlying themes. Explore how the meaning of its events changed as Joseph recognized God at work behind the scenes.
UNIT 2: Neighbors. “Neighbor” is an important theme in both the Old and New Testaments with several perspectives. The first session gathers various verses from Proverbs on this topic. The second session, using a passage from Ruth, invites us to think about what it means to be a neighbor to immigrants. The third session focuses on Jesus’ parable about neighbors and how to treat them. The fourth session takes us to Mark’s gospel for an example of four individuals who were true neighbors to a man who needed to meet Jesus.
UNIT 3: Suffering. Suffering in some form comes to all of us at some point (or points) in life. Consider how Job, who suffered greatly, responded to God and his calamities in five diverse ways: worship, resignation, protest, angry despair, and acceptance. This study helps us recognize what may be going on in our spirit when suffering overtakes us and how it can deepen our relationship with God.
